Brides and grooms 'saving for a rainy day'

Brides and grooms 'saving for a rainy day' As the recession continues in the UK, it is likely that many people will be spending less on unnecessary extravagances and cutting back wherever they can.

Couples planning their weddings are no exception, according to one financial expert, and they too are tightening their purse strings and being more prudent with their funds.

Andy Smith, a spokesperson for Abbey, said that nowadays, people are making sure they have a "rainy day fund" in case of emergencies.

It is not just the newlyweds themselves that are cutting back, he continues, as their guests are also watching their spending.

"Looking after yourself and putting money aside might actually impact upon how much you can spend on wedding gifts," Mr Smith says.

These comments come after research from the financial services provider revealed that people spend an average of £64.79 on a wedding present for their relatives.

This is compared to £70.43 in June 2007.ADNFCR-2066-ID-19337954-ADNFCR
