Increasing numbers of people are choosing to tie the knot abroad, according to new research.

Travel operators Thomson and First Choice claim that they have seen bookings rise by 35 per cent in the past year as more and more people opt to jet off to sunnier climes for their ceremonies.

Part of the reason for this could be because it is often cheaper to get married overseas.

According to a study conducted by Mintel, weddings abroad often cost around £6,500, while those in the UK average at £20,000.

"This is because generally you will have less people to cater for, extras like photographers and flowers tend to be cheaper and the cost of venues tends to be less," First Choice stated.

If getting married abroad does not appeal to couples currently planning their big day, then they may prefer to get some ideas from real-life weddings that have taken place at country houses here.
